Torquay is a booming resort town, situated at the start of the Great Ocean Road, approximately 100km South West of Melbourne, and 26km South of Geelong. Known as the Surf Capital of Australia, Torquay boasts some excellent surf and swimming beaches, including Bells Beach, home of the internationally recognised Rip Curl Professional Surfing Carnival, held annually at Easter. Torquay also has the largest surfing museum in the world, situated in the Surf City Plaza. International surfing brands Quicksilver and Rip Curl, were both started in the town in the early 1970`s. During the Christmas and Easter holiday periods the population of Torquay increases 4-fold, staying in a range of accommodation ranging from camping grounds to 4 star resort hotels, plus a multitude of holiday homes.

Today Torquay has a permanent population of over 10,000, with a comfortable mix of young working families, and retirees from Melbourne and many other parts of Victoria and interstate. With 5 major banks, two supermarkets, a post office, and a multitude of boutiques and specialty shops, restaurants, and an established coffee culture, the town is well equipped to meet the needs of the residents. Many residents commute to work in Geelong and Melbourne, using the excellent road systems.

The Lions Club of Torquay was chartered in 1969, and now has nearly 40 members. Major projects over the years have been many and varied and in recent years, fundraising by means of barbecues, a childrens train, raffles, and fundraising social events, has generated large amounts of money, which is mainly spent in the local community.
